N Let's Talk Quarterbacks

I have heard some rumors that are not too hard to believe about Cody Green having the coaches behind him to take the job. I would be disappointed if Zac Lee starts next year.

One who I am most intrigued about is, Martinez for sure because I have no idea about him, but Brion Carnes... this cat looks sick.

Could be interesting to see. Lee ended the season really well. Guess it just depends who performs best in the spring. Any indication we might go to a 2 quarterback system? Switching series, formations, sets or plays?

I'm anxious to see what Martinez and Spano can do in the spring

We will have to see how lee recovers from the surgery, but he has a lot of time to rehab before fall. Lee will start and Greene will see much more game time this coming season. Does anyone have anymore knowledge on the possible 2 quarterback system?

I don't know who it will be, but I keep reading how the coaches are impressed with Martinez, so I am thinking that he just might have a shot at being the starter.

I don't have "knowledge" on the system. It only works with the right system, personalities and coaches. Not sure we have that perfect combo in Nebraska. I know they tried it a few times, but I think that was just to get Green some reps. And they pulled Lee one time to try to jump start him with some shock therapy. Definitely will be an interesting Spring at QB.

Here is my break down on each of the options and what I think what they will do.

Zac Lee- Seems to be on Bo's good side. Showed great promise early on and late in the bowl game, especially seemed to finally run with a purpose in the bowl game and looked like we thought he might going into the season. We know he had an arm injury, how much did that affect him is up for debate. I saw a highly accurate passer in his first 4 games and in the bowl game with a month to get ready. Bad news for Zac is that he won't get into the competition until Fall Ball. He needs to really hit the Summer Work Outs hard to re-establish his timing with the WR's so he is ready to defend his starting position when Fall Ball starts. I think Zac is the early favorite though despite his injury situation to be the starter at the beginning of 2010.

Kody Spano -Unfortunately we don't haven't seen anything really from him due to injuries, heck I don't recall seeing him in any Spring Game action either over the last 2 seasons. What I have heard though is that he has been impressive in practices when healthy. Watson kept saying that Kody and Zac were competing hard last Spring before Kody went down. Kody has 2 full years in the system, remember he was a JAN enrollee in 2008, so besides Zac, Kody has the most time in the system. My gut tells me that had Kody not gone down last Spring, Cody Green would have redshirted. The big downside on Kody is how his knees will hold up and does he still have good mobility to move around in the pocket and more importantly execute the Zone Read and QB run game which is now a big part of the Husker O? Two straight years Kody has had knee injuries, this is what really worries me about Kody. I really hope that he can stay healthy and has enough speed and mobility to be effective in the run game. I think Kody has an advantage over everyone but Zac Lee in the passing game. As much as the Husker O is about the run these days, we all saw this season what happens if we don't have a potent passing game to break the defense. This may be the wild card for Kody.

Cody Green -Ah the prodigal son. Everyone seemed so willing just to throw Cody out as the starter expecting Tommie Frasier like performance, the last Husker QB to start as a Freshman. Thrust into the Back Up role by virtue of Kody Spano going down, Cody did get some decent playing time and even a couple of starts. It was apparent however, that Cody just wasn't ready to execute at the College level in this offense. Everyone seems to forget that the WCO passing scheme is a very complicate scheme that takes time to learn, it isn't the same situation as Tommie Frasier had. Cody has all of the tools and we keep reading about how quickly he is assimilating the system. The young man seems to be a very mature individual and a lot of players make a big leap in year two. Huskersfan69 has even intimated that the Coaches have put a lot of extra time in with Cody as well. Getting a full set of Spring Practices that Zac doesn't get seems to be to Cody's advantage also. Cody seems poised to step up and be a bigger contributor this season, however I just can't get out of my head how big the gap between Zac and Cody looked in the Bowl Game. It was apparent that Zac was miles ahead of Cody at that point. Can Cody close the gap? Heck can Cody fend off Kody Spano? I think Cody is at least the favorite to win the back up job again this season and maybe be able to supplant himself as the starter somewhere in the middle of the season, depending on how much he progresses. It is also possible that we see a decent amount of 2 QB's through out the season as well.

Taylor Martinez -T-Mart is a wild card at this point. I have read countless snippets about how the Coaches love his ability, he may be the most dynamic athlete on the team. Through out the year he was a terror as a Scout Team QB, an absolute magician with the Ball in his hand. I believe he was a Scout Team Offensive MVP. Word is during Bowl Game practices that he saw a lot of time at WR, a possible precursor to his future potential. However it looks like T-Mart will get his shot to be a QB at NU. He is an excellent runner and frankly he is probably the best of all of the current QB's in this regard and with NU's focus on the Zone Read and QB run game, this gives T-Mart a good chance. The biggest question mark for him is the passing game. Several people think he has a weak arm and has a soft ball, not sure how true this is but if he can't be a difference maker in the passing game then he won't be a QB in the future. This Spring is critical for him at QB. If T-Mart doesn't come out of the Spring at least in a position to compete with Zac Lee for the starting job, then look for him to get moved to WR or DB. One other thing to think about with T-Mart, word is that he is a VERY self-assured young man. To the point that it has caused some issues with teammates. If this is true, then it will be interesting to see what he decides to do if asked to make a switch in position. I am not ruling out a transfer for him if he thinks being a College QB is what he should be doing.

Ron Kellog -A walk on QB last year from NE, I heard a few good things about him. However it is tough to figure out where he fits into the picture. He may be a guy we hear a lot about in 2012 or 2013, but I don't think we hear a lot about him for 2010 or even 2011.

Brion Carnes -The next prodigal son, after Cody Green of course. His ties to Tommie Frasier already place undue expectations on the young man. Watching his video and I get a similar feel as I did watching Cody Green. Brion isn't as tall as Cody, but Brion's throwing motion doesn't look like it needs as much work as Cody's did. My gut tells me he may be a player in the future, but I think he redshirts this coming season.

LaTravis Washington -The forgotten man in all of this talk. LaTravis has tons of potential, Ohio State recruited him to play QB once upon a time, but I think that LaTravis getting beat out by Cody is telling. LaTravis is a hard worker and will compete hard and really push the other guys, so he will be a positive factor on the team. LaTravis can also be thanked partially for helping bring Brion Carnes to NU. LaTravis was also a QB at Brion's HS and talked to Brion during the recruiting season. Brion's Coach said it was a great sign to Brion about the quality of the Husker Coaching Staff that a player like LaTravis, someone who isn't a key player, raved about the environment and Coaches. I think LaTravis is one of those individuals who will have a big impact on the team this year as a leader and setting an example. LaTravis needs to really keep in the ear of T-Mart for one.

I'm a firm believer that Lee's injury was no joke. He'll be the starter, I think.
