Icon20 Gilmore seeks rise in WR production

Nebraska’s wide receivers might face a difficult challenge trying to match the production of 2008 senior wideouts Nate Swift and Todd Peterson. It might even be natural to expect a slight drop-off atop the Husker wideout chain.

Just don’t tell that to NU receivers coach Ted Gilmore.

“I told our guys in no uncertain terms the expectation doesn’t change,” Gilmore said Friday. “If anything, we want them to exceed last year.”

In fact, Gilmore gave his current group of wideouts the same speech he gave his crew last year at this time, when Nebraska was set to replace departed Maurice Purify, Terrence Nunn, Frantz Hardy and Dan Erickson.

“We had the same questions, and nobody ever thought that between Nate and Todd that you’d have one who caught 63 balls (Swift) and one with 62 (Peterson), and that there would be 1,700 receiving yards between the two of them.”

Nebraska now turns to senior Menelik Holt (30 receptions last season) and junior Niles Paul (23), the returning leaders among the wideouts in terms of production. Gilmore expects each to raise his level of play. The same goes for all the wideouts vying for playing time, most notably Chris Brooks, Curenski Gilleylen, Wes Cammack and Marcus Mendoza, a converted running back.

“I’m a firm believer you can’t expect a kid to get better if he’s not put in those (challenging) situations,” Gilmore said. “Now it’s time for these guys to rise to the top because they’re going to get their opportunity.”

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Holt, of San Diego, embraces the challenge of becoming a leader at the position.

“The younger guys are going to be looking around, and I’m one of the oldest guys who’s played,” Holt said. “So when they look to me, I want to give them the right impression and show them the right things to do.

“That’s what Nate and Todd and Mo (Purify) did for me, so I want to make sure that there’s no drop-off from this year to last year.”

There's some huge shoes to fill. I'm intrigued to see what Mendoza can do

Yeah there is a lot of lost production to make up for, but as the article pointed out it is similar to last year with Nunn and Purify leaving. Weren't quite sure Swift and Peterson could do it. I think there is talent to pull from though.

Journalstar.com had a pretty good report on the recruits who were going to be at the spring game. The position I looked for quickly was the WR. I really wanted to see if we have a shot at getting our hands on some good WR talent. It will definitely be interesting to see what our current guys can do. But it can't hurt to have some good depth and talent either.

WR is definately a big target for the 2010 recruiting class. They are going after some serious talent. I think they need to pull in 2 big time talents in this class. The Spring game visitors seeing the 80K in red is a great start!
