Cook excited by recruiting class - Husker Forums - Husker Hooligans

LINCOLN —
Nebraska coach John Cook unveiled his recruiting class for 2009 on Friday.

The class consists of Papillion-LaVista outside hitter Gina Mancuso, Ewing middle blocker Hayley Thramer, libero Megan Pendergast of League City, Texas, and outside hitter Hannah Werth of Springfield, Ill.

To say Cook is excited about the class might be an understatement.

"We're pumped about this class of '09," Cook said Friday. "I can't wait until they get here because I think they're going to have a major impact on the program over the next few years.

"There is one big reason for that. All four are very athletic and all four are very competitive. You combine those two things and that's the reason they'll impact Nebraska volleyball during their careers here."

Werth is the highest-rated recruit in the class. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter was rated the No. 4 recruit in the nation by Prepvolleyball.com. Cook said he identified her as a freshman in high school as a player he wanted in his program.

"The first time I saw her play she was in ninth grade," Cook said. "I told our assistants that we have to get her. She's an Illinois kid. She's Midwest. She's somebody we have to get in this program.

"Fortunately she loves it here. She loves what our program is about."

Werth comes for an extremely athletic family. Her older brother, Jason, is an outfielder for the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies. Her mother was a track star at the University of Florida while her father, Dennis, played four years with the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Royals.

Her uncle Dick Schofield and grandfather Dick "Ducky" Schofield also played in the major leagues.

Cook said Werth will be competing for the spot that senior Jordan Larson will be vacating.

"She's a very powerful hitter and she can play all the way around," Cook said. "Now is she going to be Jordan Larson? I'm not going to ever compare anybody. I think Jordan will be one of the greatest players to ever play in this program.

"But she's definitely somebody who fits that mold and those are hard recruits to find, players that can block, hit, pass, play defense, serve and do all those things very well. I think with Gina and Hannah we have two players who are that type of player."

All four of the Husker recruits are rated among the top 70 in the nation by Prepvolleyball.com. Mancuso is No. 20, Pendergast No. 42 and Thramer No. 67.

Cook said Thramer will likely redshirt her first season with the program while Pendergast will join sophomore libero Kayla Banwarth in the back row.

Both Pendergast and Werth are planning to enroll at Nebraska in January to get a head start on their college careers.

"Both (Werth) and Megan are going to start here in January by their choice," Cook said. "It's something that they both asked us if they could do it. I think it just shows how excited they are to get to college and make an impact on this program as freshmen."

I was wondering who was going to replace Jordan Larsen, she was a great one.

Team will get the NC again, prolly 2 years, maybe next year.
